Verified Reviewer |I was born at night, but not last night.
I want to state out of the gate- I am not a "customer". I opted against going with the firm.
My experience was limited to message exchange as evidently it is believed that typing back and forth accomplishes more than a phone call.
First Warning Sign for me was a " email only" contact construct.
The firm wants to take a piece of net sales, control the payments AND they expect the customer to pay upfront?
Only a fool would agree to this. One is either acting as a publisher, or one is offering a service to deliver a product to the customer.
If a firm wants to be my ' publisher' and take proceeds from sales- then I ( or anybody else) should not have to pay anything.
The " contract" they offer - I had it reviewed by an attorney , who said " You would have to be a complete idiot to sign this".
These people expect authors to pay, ( acting as a service provider) AND then take a cut of sales( acting as publisher). This is insane and you should RUN
- Are affordable upfront
- Are playing both sides
User's recommendation: RUN , don't walk, RUN away
Deceptive contract
I signed a DIY contract with #booklocker which means all they had to was print the book. I signed the contract which stated the book would have to be sold at booklockers minimum price.
I didn't think much of it until they told me I would have to pri emy386 page paperback at $18.95! I balked at that price and asked for refund. They refused saying they had already started work on the book which was complete bull because I handed them everything completely done cover and all. How ridiculous to price a paperback at almost $20 when the ebook sells for 3.99.So be warned.
#booklockers contract is deceptive.
They don't state the minimum price for your book until you're signed. I would up self publishing both formats on kdp and couldn't be more pleased with the results.save your money and avoid #booklocker!

A Quailty Company: Booklocker
Ten years ago, Booklocker helped me publish my first book. I was so impressed with Angela Hoy, the fearless leader at Booklocker, that I published my next four books with Booklocker.
As you may have already guessed, my current book project will be published by Angela and her crew. Down the road, Booklocker will be called upon to publish the future manuscripts that reside in my dreams!

Wendie Pecharsky, author of The *** of Buchenwald, first contacted us in 2019 about publishing her book. She contacted us again in 2021, saying, "I've done quite a lot of research, and your service seems to be the most friendly and affordable." That is correct.
BookLocker has been in business for more than 20 years, has published more than 13,000 print and electronic titles, and has an excellent reputation. In 2022, Wendie contacted us yet again, and said she had considered using another company, but "I was reading the complaints and I'm worried about the quality of the paperback." We provided her with our specs, and told her she could sign up for our D.I.Y. package for only $149 since her files were already formatted. We exchanged several messages over a 3-week period.
She then notified us that she wanted to terminate, and wanted a refund. Our contract states that no refunds are available for D.I.Y. projects. The cost is only $149 and we must not only exchange correspondence with the author about their project, but we must also check their files to ensure they are formatted to the printer's specs.
We had already performed all of those services for the author when she decided she wanted to terminate. We publish high quality trade paperback books (and hardcovers, of course) and our prices are in line with traditionally published books of the same quality. We do not publish mass-market paperback books with thin covers and cheap newsprint interiors. Since we break even on setup fees, and earn our profits on book sales, and since we've grown significantly since 1998, our prices are clearly not an impediment to buyers.
Ebooks can be priced as low as $2.99 and most folks are happy to buy the ebook edition to avoid print and shipping fees.
However, we still sell far more print books than ebooks. Angela Hoy President & CEO BookLocker.com, Inc.
They also charge the author $18.00 per year to keep your book 'on file'. A bit strange.
I quite dislike their 'minimum charge' for a paperback as well.
That is for the Author to decide pursuant to research, market analysis and proper pricing. Few consumers will buy an independent Author's work for $26.00 (as I was informed my book must be sold.) NOT cool.
BookLocker's printer/distributor charges an annual fee for each active print title. That is in the contract.
Many of our competitors charge upwards of $75/year for the exact same fee. And, they use the same printer/distributor. The fee is more than fair and it keeps a book active in their systems, as well as ours, regardless if a title is actively selling or not. Any incoming royalties, of course, help pay for that fee.
